MOTW Cleaner — Upgrade Overview

What's New & Improved

Version 2.0  |  April 2026

1. Windows Shell Integration

The upgraded MOTW Cleaner now integrates directly with the Windows shell, enabling users to right-click files or folders in Windows Explorer and instantly invoke MOTW cleaning operations. This removes the need to drag-and-drop or manually open the application for every task, providing a seamless, native-feeling workflow.

Right-click context menu entries for individual files and folders

"Clean MOTW" and "Scan for MOTW" options appear directly in the Windows Explorer context menu

Supports single-file and batch (folder-level) operations from Explorer

Integrates cleanly with Windows 10 and Windows 11 shell extension APIs

Can be enabled or disabled from within the application settings

Right Click any File, Folder or Zipfile and select Remove Web Block

2. Settings Persistence

User preferences and configuration are now saved and restored automatically between sessions. Previously, settings would reset on every launch — the new persistence layer ensures your workflow stays exactly as you configured it.

All user preferences (scan options, display settings, default paths) are saved to a local configuration file

Settings are restored automatically on application startup

Supports export and import of settings profiles for backup or sharing across machines

Graceful fallback to defaults if the configuration file is missing or corrupted

No registry modifications — all settings use portable, file-based storage

3. Centralized ShellIntegration Engine

Under the hood, all shell-related functionality has been consolidated into a single, centralized Shell Integration engine. This architectural improvement simplifies maintenance, reduces code duplication, and ensures consistent behavior across all shell entry points.

Single engine class manages all shell registration, un_registration, and invocation logic

Eliminates scattered shell calls — all shell operations routed through one clean API

Easier to extend with new shell actions (e.g., future "Pin to Quick Access" or drag-and-drop handlers)

Improved error handling and logging for shell operations

Modular design allows the engine to be tested and updated independently

4. Improved Tooltips

Tooltips throughout the application have been redesigned for clarity and usefulness. Every interactive element now provides context-sensitive guidance, helping both new and experienced users understand available actions at a glance.

Tooltips added or improved for all toolbar buttons, menu items, and status indicators

Context-sensitive content — tooltips adapt based on the current application state

Consistent formatting and timing across the entire UI

Reduced visual clutter — tooltips appear only when genuinely helpful

Supports accessibility readers for improved screen-reader compatibility

5. Stability Improvements

This release includes a range of stability and reliability improvements. Edge cases, error handling, and resource management have all been tightened to deliver a more resilient application experience.

Fixed potential crash when processing files with unusual or very long path names

Improved handling of locked or in-use files during batch operations

Reduced memory footprint during large folder scans

Better exception handling and user-friendly error messages throughout

Addressed UI thread-blocking issues for smoother responsiveness during heavy operations

Enhanced logging for easier troubleshooting and diagnostics

This upgrade reflects a commitment to making MOTW Cleaner faster, more integrated, and more reliable. Whether you're cleaning a single download or batch-processing an entire folder tree, these improvements ensure a smoother, more professional experience.
